The seed ye sow, another reaps; The wealth ye find, another keeps; The robes ye weave, another wears; The arms ye forge, another bears. -P.B. Shelly, 1819

On falling in love: a poem

I used to pride myself in my ability
to make people fall in love with me.
I calculated every move,
positioning myself where I was seen
in the most optimal light,
where I knew I was prefect,
and I was out of sight.
I used to feel victory when another would gaze
upon me with puppy-dog eyes,
and only then did I know I was loved.

Over the years,
I stopped positioning myself.
I stopped moving all together.
Continuously luring in the wrong ones:
The ones who would fall in love with an illusion,
Those who took fancy in my facade.
The last of them broke my heart.
They fell in love with my impeccably painted mask
just as I was coming out from behind it,
and they preferred my mask to me.

And now you gaze upon my skin,
pale from never having seen the light of day,
And you love me.
And I know you do because
I didn't ask you to.
Your affections were not sought out
by my searching misconceptions.
You decided to love me of your own volition,
and that terrifies me
because you made the decision to love me,
Not I.
And the only thing I can do
is believe it's true.
